Dog Allergies
Can Dogs Get Allergies?
Humans who suffer from seasonal allergies usually have symptoms involving the respiratory tract like sniffling, sneezing, coughing, and sometimes difficulty breathing.
But when a dog has a ‘seasonal allergic response’, the symptoms can be quite diverse, most often the symptoms they present are expressed as a condition called allergic dermatitis (atopic dermatitis) which is an irritation or inflammation of the skin.
Dog Allergy Signs
Does My Dog Have Allergies?
How do you know your pet is suffering from allergies? A dog with allergies is usually very itchy. He’ll scratch excessively and may be generally irritated or snappish. He might bite or chew at a certain part of his body, or he may be itchy from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail. He may rub his body against furniture or the carpet to help relieve his miserable itch.
As the itching and scratching gets progressively worse, the skin becomes inflamed and tender, and secondary infections can develop. There might be areas of hair loss, open sores, or sores that have scabbed over. He might develop ‘hot spots’, which are areas of inflamed, infected skin resulting from overgrowth of normal skin bacteria.

Is CBD Good for Dogs Allergies?
Academic research centers in the United States and elsewhere are currently studying the effects of using CBD-rich products to treat a wide range of human conditions like—chronic pain, cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, asthma and allergies. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-intoxicating, non-psychogenic component of the hemp plant that holds enormous therapeutic potential for our pets with similar age-related medical conditions.
However, the positive effects of CBD for dogs extend well beyond the physical care of your pet–full spectrum CBD oil is a safe, holistic pet food supplement that can also improve mental, emotional and behavioral related canine issues as well.

12 yr. old Golden Retriever
How Canine Support Formula
Relieved Kandi Lea's skin irritation & Atopic Dermatitis
Kandi Lea is a 12 year old Golden Retriever diagnosed with canine Atopic Dermatitis. She had previously been prescribed Apoquel to help treat inflammation and control itching but her pet parents did not see consistent symptom relief and were worried about the long-term, negative side effects of Apoquel on her immune system.
Kandi was started on a CBD-rich hemp oil, Canine Support Formula, at a weight appropriate dose and following a 30-day post treatment assessment showed visible improvements in reduced skin rashes and hair loss. Her symptoms of scratching and vigorous biting had cessed along with localized 'Hot-Spots' on her legs that had becomme crusted and hardened.
Over the following 60 days her hair grew back to a naturally beautiful red color and was thicker and fuller, even in areas of constant distress.
As the Before & After photos prove, Canine Support Formula relieved Kandi Lea's allergy symptoms, improved her skin health and reduced the anxiety associated with her condition. The natural, full spectrum phytocannabinoids in Canine Support Formula was dramatic success for relieveing Kandi Lea's Atopic Dermatitis!

Dogs Allergies Hives – CBD For Relieving Dogs Itching
Similar to humans, some dogs have an inherent sensitivity to their home surroundings that can manifest into a hyper-sensitivity to certain environmental insults.
These canines can develop a chronic allergic skin reaction to common household products like indoor cleaners, solvents, scented oils or chemicals used outdoors like pesticides & herbicides.

The use of medicated dog shampoos or highly concentrated chemicals in flea & tick collars can also be a precipitating cause of a dog’s acute allergic reaction.
When presented with dogs showing symptoms related to allergic responses, the vast majority of veterinarians will prescribe a regimen of OTC anti-allergy drugs and antibiotics and/or anti-viral medications.
But relieving symptoms without addressing the underlying cause (or source) of the problem is a short-term fix that can become a lifelong health problem for your pet. And unlike CBD, certain drugs used to stop the over-active allergic cycle can have significant, potentially very serious side effects.
Fortunately, CBD oil is a safer way to relieve your dog’s symptoms than pharmaceutical drugs while you (and your vet) work to discover the contact source or root cause of the allergic reaction–a condition called allergic dermatitis.
Food Allergies in Dogs
Contrary to what you’ve probably been led to believe, pets need diversity in their diets just like humans do. Over time and repeated exposure, they might become sensitive to the single source of chemically laced protein they’ve been getting (chances are the meat is loaded with antibiotics and hormones causing immune system over-reaction).
Providing variety in your dog's feeding is important to avoid developing sensitivities to highly processed dry kibble products. Click To TweetAverage, healthy dogs can grow sensitive to certain allergenic ingredients in their food–typically grains and other carbohydrates. Work with your holistic vet to develop an ‘Allergy Elimination Diet’ to help pinpoint the source of any allergic type problems.
If your dog has an allergy or issues with something he’s eating or frequently in contact with, it may show itself not only as digestive upset (gas, diarrhea, vomiting, etc.), but also as one or several of these symptoms:
- Red, irritated eyes- Inflamed ears
- Coughing, sneezing, asthma
- Dark nasal discharge
- Itchy or oozing skin sores
- Swollen, dry dog nose
- Excessive scratching or chewing areas of the body (hot spots)

Environmental Allergies in Dogs
In addition to flea saliva and certain foods/ingredients, your dog can also be allergic to an infinite variety of irritants in the environment. These can be outdoor allergens like ragweed, grass and pollens, as well as indoor irritants like mold, dust mites, cleaning chemicals and even fabrics like wool or cotton.
As a general rule, if your dog is allergic to something inside your home, he’ll have year-round symptoms. If he’s reacting to something outdoors, it could very well be a seasonal allergy problem.
Also, your pet’s immune system is partly influenced by genetics, so he can actually inherit a tendency toward hyper-sensitivities to both a food and/or environmental allergen.
Dogs Allergies on the Skin
Allergic reactions are produced by your pet’s immune system, and the way his immune system functions is a combined result of both nature (his genetics) and nurture (his environment).
How Does CBD Oil Work for Dogs Allergies?
According to medical literature, CBD oil affects many canine biological pathways through the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) and functions to optimize cellular interactions involved in the repair and restoration of whole-body systems to maintain normal homeostasis.
These effects can be at the cellular level as well as in the gene-expression for developing certain sensitivities.

Home Remedies for Dogs Skin Itching
CBD oil as a treatment for Allergic Dermatitis seems to work by modulating the cellular inflammatory response. In particular, CBD acts as a neuro-immune modulator, or signaling molecule, for communication between cellular structures, tissues and organ systems specifically involved with inflammation & allergic responses.
Cannabidiol curbs inflammation by suppressing the infiltration and functional activity of T cells and macrophages at the site of inflammation; thereby preventing the cascade of cellular immune/allergic response that result in your dog’s sorrowful itching & scratching behavior.
Previous studies concluded that endocannabinoid receptors are “up-regulated” in dogs with atopic dermatitis (skin allergies), which suggests they can respond to this inflammatory condition by producing chemical substances that can reduce inflammation–the major cause of the symptoms of allergies.
But just like other herbal medicines, CBD may not have an immediate, instantaneous effect on this condition.
By using a daily CBD phytonutrient supplement it’s possible to suppress or at least moderate the agonizing effects of chronic inflammation for animals who suffer from skin inflammation and allergic dermatitis.
How To Cure Dogs Allergies
Although CBD seems to be a potent new therapy to positively influence the inflammatory response and eliminate the tormenting symptoms of seasonal allergies in our furry friends; using CBD for dog allergies is far more effective when used in conjunction with dietary changes and family home-environment improvements to avoid needless contact exposure to external allergen and eliminate your dog’s uncomfortable “itchiness”.

Can this replace sequel and benadryl
Hi Virginia, no medications should ever be substituted without first talking with your pet’s veterinarian. Benadryl is an effective antihistamine–Cannabidiol (CBD) works in a different manner to prevent the localized cellular allergic response from getting started. If your dog has seasonal or environmental allergies using CBD can be an effective, natural preventative approach for holistic healing.
We have recently started using CBD oil for our dog after a disastrous experience with Apoquel. How long does it take to have an effect? Is it safe to increase the dose? She’s still very itchy and has to use the ‘cone of shame’ all the time. We put baby socks on her feet at night to keep her from licking them.
We have a service lab with arthritis in her hip. Just started her on Organic Hemp CBD sans any THC. She’s 10 and immediately began acting like she’s 5!!! We’re so happy. We’re also hoping it will aide in her skin allergies that are seasonal.
Highly recommend this to anyone. She weighs 80lbs. We’re slowly adding 8 drops to her food. No way could we get it under her tongue.
After reading info here, we may try 3drops, three tones a day.
She has Glucosamine/Chondrotine in the morning with a mild pain medicine. Her eyes are clear and bright. We feed her organic carrots, cauliflower and apples. She’s a love.
Her dry food is given to her once a day in a cup of organic chicken bone broth. No salt, she loves it too. We believe in the healing properties of organic hemp CBD.
WISH more specificity for Pet Parents we’re out there. Like a weight chart. Thanks for all your doing in this area.
Mary Ann
To clarify,
We feed her more frequently, just once a day we let her meal soak in Organic chicken bone broth.
She loves fresh vegetables, and an apple with her un furred PaPa. Also has a built in timer for her Organic Coconut Oil (free trade). Dogs love it and their teeth, breath and skin love it too.
REALLY happy to see CBD Oil is good for allergies. Our little girl definitely has seasonal skin allergies.
Thanks
