I know you want this to be EASY…
But like with all medications, there’s a right way and a wrong way to use them to get the positive outcomes you want and expect for your dog.
Unfortunately, very few dog owners and even less veterinarians know exactly how to apply Cannabinoid Therapy For Dogs to effectively prevent or treat chronic conditions in our furry home companions.
CBD Is Your Dog’s ‘Personalized Medicine’
Instead of being given the same prescription pill as thousands of other canine patients (many that merely masks your dog’s symptoms and potentially cause a host of other negative side effects), CBD can be personalized to your dog’s unique situation–which is much more effective (and safer) and ultimately leads to better, faster results!
However, there’s a learning curve to understanding the basics of CBD therapy, so I’ve put together a short list to spell out the steps to help you (and your dog) get the most effective care from CBD — because what may work for one dog may not be appropriate for another…even dogs of the same breed, size and similar health challenges.
So, while you may be addressing the same animal condition (e.g., anxiety, arthritis, etc.) all dogs are different, and each will have their own unique reaction to CBD oil.
4 Steps to Get the Best Clinical Results from CBD Oil for Your Dog:
To help you personalize your dog’s medicine and get the most potent effect from hemp-derived CBD oil, follow these basic principles for effective cannabinoid therapy:
1. Choose a Premium Quality CBD Product
The most effective therapy begins with a superior, lab verified, hemp-derived, high CBD product.
First and foremost, any company selling CBD products should be able to provide a Certificate of Analysis (COA) from and independent 3rd Party lab for each product. A COA includes an analysis of total cannabinoid levels (CBD/THC/CBDA, etc.), a complete Terpene Profile, along with validated screenings for any heavy metals or residual contaminants in the sample.
Choose a Full Spectrum CBD oil that contains all of the natural plant components that contribute to the ‘Entourage Effect’ where the clinical effect of CBD is greater than the simple sum of its parts.
2. Use Weight Appropriate Dosing
Dogs come in all shapes and sizes–therefore, each dog’s CBD dosage is always going to be different. Start with a lowest recommended dose and gradually increase over a period of time. The proper starting dose is based on your dog’s weight, expressed in mgs per kg.
Because CBD has Bi-Phasic properties (more will actually produce the opposite effect), adding more CBD to your dog’s diet will make it less effective for what you’re trying to heal or balance.
Use your dog’s physical weight (not a label chart or ‘dose range’) as the baseline to make Titre adjustments over time.
3. Use Sublingual Delivery
To a large extent, the therapeutic effects provided by CBD oil can only be realized if the cannabidiol is presented to specific receptors found throughout the dog’s Endocannabinoid System (ECS). These cellular receptors are present to varying degrees in the canine brain, central nervous system & body organs and tissues.
So, before CBD can have any influence over your dog’s biological systems to correct disease processes, it first needs to be absorbed into the bloodstream and transported to cannabinoid receptors throughout the body–and the best way to do this is sublingual application.
Exposure to these ECS receptors depends on the adequate and timely ‘absorption’ of CBD into the bloodstream.
Compared to edible dog treats, sublingual application offers better absorption, faster action and a superior clinical effect.
4. Be Observant – Take Notes – Keep A Journal
CBD therapy is an ‘Observational Science’ so be prepared to keep journal notes of your dog’s reaction and progress to CBD therapy.
Once you begin dosing your dog with CBD, finding the optimum ‘sweet spot’ for treating your pet will require a systematic diligence on your part.
Start a Daily Canine Journal to track your dog’s progress. Write everything down–take copious notes documenting not only the CBD dosage but your pet’s reaction from the very first trial dose.
Be observant and write it down! After a period of time, go over your notes and look for trends in your dog’s responses. You’ll start to notice nuances in your dog towards a change in better behavior, improved activity level and in the general quality of life of your dog.
Take notice of the little things like getting up and down more freely, jumping into and out of the car again…even improvements in sleep patterns and eating habits are signs of improvement in your dog’s health.
Be Patient & Persistent with CBD Therapy
Consistency is what is going to determine the window of opportunity to fully capture the healing benefits of this extraordinary plant medicine for your dog.
Since every dog is going to have a different reaction to CBD it’s important to be vigilant in the beginning to measure and document his response.
At the core of effective CBD therapy is the willingness to learn and apply the science of cannabinoid therapy to improve all aspects of your dog’s health and well-being.
By following these 4 Steps to improve the clinical effectiveness of CBD you will be providing your dog the comfort and care of a truly personalized medicine.

Can CBD be used safely for a head injury?
Hi Carol, Cannabidiol is a known neuro-protectant. In cases of brain injury or trauma, CBD attenuates brain damage associated with neurodegenerative and/or ischemic conditions. CBD also has positive effects on attenuating psychotic-, anxiety- and depressive-like behaviors. Depending on the situation, CBD can be effective for PTSD like symptoms as well. What are your dog’s history and symptoms?
